In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a strange rumor caught fire: 5G technology was somehow responsible for the virus’s spread. Despite being entirely false—and repeatedly debunked by scientists—this theory gained surprising traction. Cell towers were vandalized, and misinformation spread across social media platforms like wildfire. But why do such conspiracy theories thrive, especially when new technologies emerge?

The answer lies at the intersection of psychology, culture, and fear of the unknown.

The Fear of the Invisible

New technologies often work in ways that are not immediately visible or intuitive. With 5G, for instance, we’re talking about radio waves—an abstract concept for most people. When people don’t understand how something works, it becomes easier to imagine the worst. The fact that 5G infrastructure was being rapidly deployed at the same time COVID-19 was spreading only fueled the coincidence-driven assumptions. Technology-driven fear is nothing new. When electricity was first introduced, some believed it would cause madness. The printing press was accused of spreading dangerous ideas. More recently, microwave ovens and Wi-Fi were blamed for a host of health problems without credible scientific backing.

In each case, the root of the panic wasn’t necessarily the technology itself—it was the rapid pace of change and a sense of losing control. When people feel powerless or alienated by innovation, they’re more susceptible to conspiratorial thinking.

Social Media’s Role in Amplifying Misinformation

Social media platforms are turbochargers for conspiracy theories. Algorithms prioritize engagement over accuracy, and emotional content—especially fear or outrage—tends to get more clicks. A false claim about 5G causing COVID is sensational and alarming, making it more likely to be shared than a dry scientific rebuttal.

This creates echo chambers where misinformation is not only spread but validated. Once a theory takes root in an online community, debunking it becomes even harder.

The Appeal of Simple Explanations

Conspiracy theories often thrive because they offer simple answers to complex problems. COVID-19 was a multifaceted global crisis, with causes and consequences that were difficult to process. Blaming 5G offered a tangible, external villain—and with it, a false sense of clarity.

Furthermore, rejecting mainstream explanations can feel empowering. It positions the believer as someone who “knows the truth” that others are too blind or manipulated to see.

The Importance of Trust and Education

At the heart of this issue is a crisis of trust—trust in science, institutions, and technology. Building public understanding around how technologies work, and fostering critical thinking from a young age, can help inoculate people against the allure of false narratives.

Emerging technologies will always provoke questions, and that’s a good thing. But when those questions give way to fear, suspicion, and conspiracy, the consequences can be real and dangerous.
