From smart assistants that promise to “understand you perfectly” to generative tools that claim to “create like a human,” AI marketing today walks a thin line between innovation and illusion. At its best, artificial intelligence delivers remarkable efficiencies and creative potential. At its worst, it’s hyped as a form of modern-day magic—mysterious, all-powerful, and often misunderstood. The problem isn’t that AI doesn’t work; it’s that tech branding often overpromises and underexplains, leaving the public with inflated expectations and limited understanding of what these tools actually do.
The roots of the issue lie in the language used by marketers and startups. Terms like “sentient,” “self-aware,” or “thinking machines” have made their way into headlines and product pitches, even though these words misrepresent how AI actually functions. Most AI models today—including popular large language models—don’t think or understand in the human sense. They pattern-match, predict, and generate outputs based on enormous datasets, without true comprehension or consciousness.
